Singapore Polytechnic, Wednesday, January 23, 2013 – Temasek Polytechnic (TP) came from behind to edge past Singapore Polytechnic (SP) with a narrow 40-38 victory in the Women’s Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Netball Championship.

The result meant TP, Ngee Ann Polytechnic and the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) all finished with identical 2-2, win-loss records. However, it was SIM that qualified for the semi-finals based on a superior goal difference. The National University of Singapore won the group to also qualify for the semi-finals.

For SP, who were the Polytechnic-Institute (POL-ITE) champions, they finished the IVP with no wins in four games.

TP, who were either tied with or trailing SP, only took their first lead (34-32) in the dying minutes of the third quarter. TP then stretched that lead to four points in the final quarter. SP tried their best to come back, but ran out of time.

TP trailed SP by three goals (10-13) at the end of the first quarter but tied it up 13-all in the early stages of the second quarter.

SP reacted and pulled away to lead 18-13, with as they forced turnovers and drew fouls. However, TP managed to defend well and by the end the second quarter, drew level at 21-21.

In the third quarter, TP cut back on their mistakes but still found themselves outscored 11-9 by SP to trail by two (30-32) heading into the final quarter.

A 10-6 final quarter ensured eventual victory for TP.

Said SP captain, Jasmine Goh: “We have no regrets, especially in this last match we played. We gave it our all and hope to improve on ourselves.”

When quizzed on the highlight of the game, Jasmine said: “It had to be the first quarter. We were more in control and the game resembled a tennis match in the way either sides scored after every attack on the opposing team, in a rebound-like fashion.”

Jasmine also added: “Both teams put up a good fight and today TP showed they were the better side. Congratulations to them.”

Jasmine also provided a brief insight on who she thought the eventual champions would be.

“I think NUS has a good chance of taking the title home this time,” said Jasmine.

Jasmine vowed her team would come back.

“We’ll be back for the next POL-ITE championship a much stronger contender, so look out for us!” added Jasmine.

The semi-final matches are scheduled to be played on Monday, January 28th, 7pm, at Singapore Polytechinic.
