Kallang Tennis Centre, Wednesday, March 6, 2013 — Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) reclaimed the National B Division Tennis Championship in a 3-2 win over Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road).
There was no repeat win for ACS (Barker) who had beaten ACS(I) 3-2 in the preliminary round to finish top of their group with five straight wins. The other teams that also fell to ACS (Barker) were Saint Andrew’s Secondary, Hwa Chong Institution, ACS (International) and NUS High. ACS(I) finished second in the group, with their only loss to ACS (Barker).
In the semi-finals, defending champions Raffles Institution (RI) went down 1-4 to ACS(I). In the other semi-final, ACS (Barker) faced no trouble in brushing aside Catholic High in a 5-0 victory.
In the third and fourth placing match, RI beat Catholic High 5-0.
With the finals finely balanced at 2-2 overall, it boiled down to the doubles match between the ACS(I) pair of Raahil Doshi and Will Angkawidjaja, and Jonathan-Kyle Tan and Thaddeus Tan of ACS (Barker).
Raahil and Will went down 2-6 in the first set, but the ACS(I) duo came back to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-1.
“It was a phenomenal game for us. Credit goes to ACS Barker for playing so well too, but we managed to show that we wanted it more badly despite trailing at first,” said Will.
“The highlight of the game was definitely when we were a set down and we managed to fight back. Will had a stomach ache and a sore throat this morning just before the match, so that made the victory all the more sweeter when we overcame all odds,” added Raahil.
Imran Mooraj of ACS(I) was the first to clinch a point for his team, when he beat Daniel Ong of ACS (Barker) 6-3, 6-2, without much difficulty.
“It was a really good game. I’m proud of myself as I thought I played really well today. I started off nervous, but I was able to overcome it and pull through,” said Imran.
When asked about his thoughts on his opponent, Daniel Ong, Imran added: “He’s a good player and I knew it would be challenging as I played him in previous tournaments. He started slow and I managed to take advantage of this.”
Imran’s win was the only singles point they won. Evan Tan of ACS(I) lost 1-6, 0-6, to D. Giritharan of ACS (Barker). Timothy Lee of ACS(I) also lost when he went down 4-6, 4-6 to Timothy Ong of ACS (Barker).
The ACS(I) doubles team of Elisha Chow and Alexander Lee secured a point when they beat the ACS (Barker) duo of Choy Jin Wei and Timothy Ho 6-4, 6-1.
In 2012, ACS(I) reached the finals after beating 4-1 Victoria School in the semi-finals. ACS Barker lost 0-5 to Raffles Institution (RI) in the other semi-finals. In the finals, Raffles edged out ACS(I) 3-2 to take home the title. ACS Barker managed to beat Victoria School to claim third.
