Wings X-Ctry: Cedar Girls’ clinch U-15 and U-18 team titles

Bedok Reservoir, Saturday, March 9, 2013 – Cedar Girls’ Secondary proved their prowess at the Wings Cross Country meet, sweeping both the U-15 and U-18 team titles.

In the U-18 category, Nah Yi Xin led the charge for Cedar Girls’ by clinching the individual gold in a timing of 15 minutes 33 seconds for the 3.6km course. Hot on her heels was Valerie Lai from River Valley High, Cedar’s strongest rival, who stopped the clock at 15:37. Lok Xin Ying from Cedar Girls’ rounded off the top three, finishing in 15:50.

In the U-15 cateogry, Isabelle Wang from River Valley High denied Cedar Girls’ the opportunity of winning both an individual and team gold by finishing a mere 0.06s in front of Cedar’s top finisher, Joyceleen Yap. Both clocked a timing of 16:22 for the 3.6km route. Haney Khairunnisa from Cedar came in third in 16:49.

Isabelle and Joyceleen had run most of the race side by side, until Isabelle decided to take the lead nearer the end of the race. Joyceleen made her move at the final bend, gaining fast on Isabelle, but it was too late.

Haney had spent most of her race running behind Joyceleen and Isabelle, keeping them within striking distance until the final bend when both of them turned on the heat, leaving her to settle for the bronze.

With regard to the double gold in both categories, a beaming Cedar Girls’ captain Edina Tan said: “I’m really happy with the team’s performance today!”

With the Wings meet the last cross country race before the ultimate goal of the National Inter-School Cross Country Championships in two weeks time, the girls can now only maintain their standard and hold off their rivals till the very end of the season.
