Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, March 25, 2013 — Dunman Secondary defeated Dunearn Secondary 66–32 to win their first game of the National B Division Basketball Championship.

Dunearn’s Kee Yong Jie (#9) started the game rolling with a jumper and Darien Mark Anonuevo of Dunman (#6) responded with drive and a foul, making it 3–2. The physically stronger Dunman squad overwhelmed Dunearn with easy drives and jump-shots. Coupled with their tight defence, Dunman contained the latter to shots beyond the arc.

Being the tallest player on court, Kelvin Lim (#4) from Dunearn stepped up often to drive into the paint, drawing contact which caused him to be sent to the line. Yong Jie beat the buzzer with a three-point shot to give Dunearn an 18–8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw Dunearn coming back into the game tougher, with Kelvin leading the offence. Dunman were outscored in the quarter by four points, and their lead was reduced to just six at the half (27–21).

Both teams started slow in the second half. Dunearn attempted to come back yet again with Kelvin taking the offensive lead. However, Kelvin could not convert his attempts and with him absent in the paint, Dunman had it easy on the boards.

With two minutes remaining, Darien sank two free throws to extend Dunman’s lead to 20 points (41–21). A successful three by Kelvin tickled the deficit but Bryan Ng’s (#12) putback off his team’s missed attempt ended the quarter with Dunman leading 43–24.

Joshua Alas (#7) from Dunman sparked a 6–0 run (49–24) to kick off the final quarter. Dunearn returned the favour with Kelvin’s back-to-back three pointers and Yong Jie’s jumper, reducing the deficit to 17 (49–32). However, Dunman were relentless and set off to demolish Dunearn with a 17–0 run to seal the game at 66–32.

Dunman’s captain, Gibson Tay (#8), commented: “The team did not perform as expected and we still have much to work on. Our fighting spirit pulled us through.”
