Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, March 27, 2013 — Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) triumphed over Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary 45–22 to extend their winning streak in the National B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

SCGS secured the tip off, with SCGS captain Woon Wei Jing (#12) sinking in two 3-pointers within the first three minutes of the game. Despite their efforts, Ahmad Ibrahim failed to convert their baskets for the first five minutes, until Zaina (#10) scored their first point in a free throw. The first quarter ended with SCGS leading 15–1.

The second quarter saw many fouls being committed and free throws awarded to both teams, with Ahmad Ibrahim’s Inggrit Indayang (#12) drawing several fouls successfully and putting in three points for her team. However, both sides did not captitalise on the many fast-breaks and free throw opportunities, resulting in each team scoring only five points for this quarter with SCGS leading 20–6 at half time.

SCGS started the second half with Chloe Alphonso (#5) converting a fast-break after an intercept by Woon Wei Jing (#12), who proceeded to score yet another fast-break with a subsequent steal – all within a short 40 seconds. A series of contests and switching of possessions ensued, with both teams caught in a scoring drought after the first minute.

Wei Jing (#12) of SCGS eventually ended it by putting in a basket at five minutes, but Ahmad Ibrahim’s Zaina (#10) answered with one of her two free throws immediately after. Ahmad Ibrahim’s captain Tan Ke Ning (#11) was also an important playmaker in the second half by single-handedly maneuvering past the tight SCGS man-to-man defence with her impeccable dribbling skills, contributing to her team’s efforts in penetrating the SCGS defence. However, SCGS did not hold back and returned the favour with several under-baskets to pull away further, ending the third quarter leading 36–11.

In the last quarter, Zaina (#10) was instrumental in closing the gap by controlling the play and making vital assists for under-baskets but Ahmad Ibrahim could not stop the dominance of SCGS in rebounds and fast-breaks. With less than 35 seconds to go, SCG Bernice Yeo (#4) of SCGS cut past two opponents to score an under-basket. Maintaining their fight till the end, Ahmad Ibrahim’s Ke Ning (#11) put in one last free throw and ended the match with an impressive layup.

SCGS captain Wei Jing (#12) felt that there was still more for her team to work on.

“Today, compared to the other games, was not as good. We were not focused and committed many unnecessary fouls. I think we can do better for the next game,” said Wei Jing.

Ahmad Ibrahim’s vice-captain Zaina (#10) commended her team: “We had very good spirit and we never gave up.”

Captain of Ahmad Ibrahim, Ke Ning (#11), added: “It was a challenging match facing the South Zone champions, but we learnt more about our opponents.”

SCGS will face New Town Secondary while Ahmad Ibrahim will play Manjusri Secondary on Monday, April 1, at the Clementi Sports Hall.
