Clementi Sports Hall, Thursday, April 11, 2013 — Dunman Secondary defeated Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) 41–37 in the second round of the National B Division Girls Basketball Championship.

Both teams started the first quarter matching each other on the scoreboard. A three-pointer by Putri Nur Syazwani Bte S (#5) and a fast break layup by Sharon Lee (#8) helped put Dunman up by four (9–5) with under a minute to go. SCGS captain Woon Wei Jing (#12) would answer with her own layup, drawing the contact to send her to the line. Her free throw reduced Dunman’s lead to just one point (8–9) to end the quarter.

Just seconds into the second quarter, Dunman captain Ong Sin Kee (#6) found herself open for an easy layup to extend the lead to three at 8–11. Wei Jing stepped up in the second quarter, pouring in seven points to help SCGS counter the Dunman offence. With just seconds to play, Nur Syafirah (Dunman #10) would sink a free throw to take a slim one-point lead but the speedy Wei Jing would beat the buzzer with a reverse layup to help SCGS take their first lead of the game at 19–18.

SCGS started the third quarter with a full-court defensive press in hopes of containing the Dunman offence. The defence proved effective as SCGS forced a turnover, leading to Wei Jing scoring on a fast break. Chloe Alphonso (#5) followed behind with two free throws to extend SCGS’ lead to four points (22–18). With just 5 minutes to go, Nur Adlina Bte Ismail (#14) attempted to keep Dunman in the game with a rebound putback, but Wei Jing would answer with a quick three-pointer. A subsequent steal and basket from Chloe put SCGS up by seven points (27–20).

With just two minutes to play, Nur Syafirah managed to find space amidst the SCGS defence for an uncontested layup but Charmaine Koh (SCGS #13) followed with her own basket. A timeout by Dunman resulted in an offensive burst from the Dunman squad and they ended the quarter trailing by just three points (29–26).

The final quarter saw Dunman breaking down the SCGS defence and Sharon sparked the Dunman offence with a three-pointer to tie the game at 29 apiece. Nur Syazwani added a long jumper and a three-pointer to cap an 8–0 run and take the lead at 29–34. SCGS responded with a 6–0 run of their own to reclaim the lead at a single point (35–34). With just two minutes left, a timeout from Dunman led to a 7–0 run, resulting in a six-point Dunman lead. In the final minute, SCGS held possession but could only sink one of their six attempts. Dunman eventually sealed the game at 37–41.

Sin Kee of Dunman said: “I think we played well. We did not give up till the last second.”

Vice-captain of Dunman, Christin Teo (#4) added: “We had good team spirit. SCGS is a very strong team and being able to defeat them is not easy. We now have an easier path to our goal as we can avoid Unity in the semi-finals.”

“Today’s game was disappointing. We had to stay strong throughout the entire game, but we could not endure,” said SCGS’s Wei Jing.

In the semi-finals, Dunman will play against Jurong Secondary while SCGS will take on Unity Secondary.
