Kallang Tennis Centre, Tuesday, April 30, 2013 — Raffles Institution (RI) beat Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) 5–0 to enter the final of the National A Division Girls’ Tennis Championship.
In Round 1, RI beat Pioneer Junior College (5–0), Serangoon Junior College (4–1) and Nanyang Junior College (5–0). In Round 2, they again topped their group after defeating National Junior College (5–0), Victoria Junior College (4–1) and St. Andrew’s Junior College (5–0).
About their comfortable 5–0 win over HCI, Jennifer Wu, captain of the RI tennis team, commented: “We were fortunate that we had a good line-up or it could have been tougher. HC had two singles (players) who were quite strong.”
Should RI win in the upcoming final, it would be their third consecutive championship title. Nonetheless, Jennifer was certain the team would not become complacent.
“Last year, we had a tough fight against AC though we had more experienced players (as compared to this year). Though we eventually won with a score of 3–2, the last match was a 3-setter which was rather nerve-wracking.”
Despite RI’s clear dominance in the nationals thus far, they have a team, consisting of only 11 people, of whom five are in Year 6, and six are year 5s.
RI will be playing against Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) for the National A Division Tennis Championship title on Thursday, May 9, at the Kallang Tennis Centre. ACJC beat Victoria Junior College 4-1 in the other semi-final.
