Jurong East Sports Hall, Tuesday, August 6, 2013 – The Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) beat CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) 55–41 to win the South Zone C Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.
This is the fourth zonal title in a row for SCGS and the second year running that the South Zone final has featured these two teams.
Jayne Chan (#12) of CHIJ(TP) had a game-high 28 points, including three 3-pointers. Jayne accounted for all the CHIJ(TP) scoring in the first quarter, and 11 out of 15 points in the second. In the third, she scored eight out of the 10 points for CHIJ(TP) and managed only three in the fourth because of foul trouble.
SCGS had three players – Rachel Yeo (#10), Caroline Gregory (#11) and Aisling Lum (#9) – with a team-high 10 points each and their centre, Tiana Ng (#14) chipped in with eight in a show of scoring depth.
CHIJ(TP) were heavily dependent on Jayne Chan (#12) and Desiree Lee (#14) for most of their scoring. Jayne, with her 28 points, and Desiree, with seven, accounted for 35 out of the 41 points their team scored. Claire Tay (#9) accounted for the remaining six points.
CHIJ(TP) took a slim two-point, 21–19 lead into half-time and the two teams remained neck-and-neck through most of the third quarter. At the end of the third, SCGS went on a 6–0 scoring streak to take a 35–31 lead into the fourth quarter.
And that’s when the bench strength of the three-time defending South Zone champions made all the difference.
As their defenders restricted the scoring opportunities for CHIJ(TP), the SCGS shooters established an 11-point lead within the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. However, CHIJ continued to hang in there and with 3:48 left on the clock, had clawed their way back to a seven-point deficit at 37–45.
However, Jayne Chan (#12) fouled out shortly after and CHIJ(TP) lost their main scorer. Even though SCGS lost their centre Tiana Ng (#14) who also fouled out with 2:36 left, they still had enough offensive power to pull away to lead 51–39, a 12-point lead with 1:34 left on the clock.
Desiree Lee (#14) then went down with an injury and CHIJ(TP) and SCGS went on to seal the 55–41 win.
SCGS and CHIJ(TP) now move on to the national championship where they will be joined by Zhonghua Secondary and Raffles Girls’ School (RGS). RGS beat Zhonghua 39–33 to finish third.
