Nanyang Technological University, Monday, September 9, 2013 — Nanyang Technological University (NTU) took home gold when their doubles pair of Desmond Boey and Benjamin Tan defeated the National University of Singapore (NUS) duo of Justin Low and Oscar Sväerd 9–6 in the Singapore University Games (SUniG) Tennis Championship.

The NTU showed more consistency and managed to break their opponent’s serve very early in the game, giving them a two-game lead throughout most of the rest of the match.

“It was a good match and Ben played very well,” said Desmond, praising his partner. “We were one break up from the second game onwards and I guess it wouldn’t have felt so special if we won like 9–7 [without dropping a serve]. But at 6–4, they (NUS) caught up to 6–all and that was when it really mattered and Benjamin stepped up in his play so it made it more special.”

On the other hand, the match for the NUS duo was not very good. “It was a fun game to play but we didn’t deliver,” said Oscar, who is an exchange student from Sweden and played for his national team back home.

“They played very high percentage tennis but that’s too high risk and there were also too many unforced errors from our side,” added Justin.

This was the closest match the NUS pair found themselves in. They had defeated their previous two opponents from Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) 9–0 and 9–1 respectively.
