Mckenrick Lim, 25, will represent Singapore in the 27th South-East Asian (SEA) Games in Myanmar this month. Floorball is a demonstration sport at the Games.
We caught up with Mckenrick about his sport in the lead-up to the Games.
Joseph Lee: What challenges have you faced heading into the SEA Games?
Mckenrick: Due to some last-minute decisions, collating information from different members was hard. Because of the time constraints and also due to some of the players serving their National Service, getting the information from each individual was harder.
What do you hope to achieve at this SEA Games?
Mckenrick: As this is the first SEA Games and we are playing as a demo sport, I just hope to gain the exposure and experience of how it’s like to be part of it. After this SEA Games, we hope to see floorball as an official sport in the next few editions.
What was your training like in the lead-up to the SEA Games?
Mckenrick: The news of floorball being included as a demo game came at the last minute, hence the team did not have a fixed number of training days per week. But we do have friendly games with schools and clubs.
Who is your role model?
Mckenrick: Mr Amir, my coach during my polytechnic days. His coaching style nurtures us not only on court, but also when we are off it.
How did you get started in your sport?
Mckenrick: During a introductory clinic during my primary school days.
What is your best school sport memory?
Mckenrick: The training days with my team mates and seeing it pay off for us during competitions when I was playing with Republic Polytechnic (RP).
If you did not pick up floorball, what other sport would you do?
Mckenrick: I would say ice hockey will be one of the sports I would really want to play, but I can’t skate. Haha.
Any pre-match rituals?
Mckenrick: Watching sports movies and listening to some house music before games.
What is your biggest motivation?
Mckenrick: The future with the team. You will never know what might happen during a training or a competition. You have to be there to experience all of it. That’s what drives me. You don’t know what you don’t know till you are living it.
