Myanmar, Monday, December 9, 2013 – Singapore have lost their first two games of the South-East Asian (SEA) Games basketball tournament.
In their opening game against Thailand, our boys lost by 10 points, going down 59–69. Singapore took a two-point 16–14 lead into the second period but Thailand outscored our boys by 10 to leave us trailing 29–37 at half time.
Singapore were led by captain Ng Hanbin with 13 points. The team shot 50 percent from field goal range with Desmond and Ng Hanbin sinking two 3-pointers in 11 attempts.
Singapore lost their second game 75–88 against the Philippines. The game was tied at 33–33 at half time.
“Us taking a 16-9 lead and coming in to the 3rd [quarter] tied at half time,” said Joe So, assistant coach, when asked what where the highlights of the game against the traditional powerhouses.
“The play of our bigs against an international star in Marcus Dougthit,” added Joe.
As for what worked well for our boys, Joe said: “Our discipline and fighting spirit. When we played as a team, we were able to play against any team. Defense on 6’11 Dougthit by Russel and Delvin. Also, the composure of our point guard Wong Wei Long to handle the tempo of the game.”
What didn’t work well was the team’s transitional defense and boxing out during key moments of the game, added Joe.
Wei Long had a game-high 23 points, including two 3-pointers. Singapore sank 24 of 81 field-goal attempts (30 percent) and went seven of 19 (37 percent) from 3-point range.
