Singapore Polytechnic, Saturday, January 11, 2014 — Muhammad Reyhan Amierul of Temasek Polytechnic was in scintillating form as he triumphed in the men’s 400m final at the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Track and Field Championships.
Starting in lane four as the fastest qualifier in the heats, Reyhan outsprinted a quality field consisting of Loh Guo Pei of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), who represented Singapore in the 2013 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, as well as former national schools champion Luqman Zamrot of Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Guo Pei and Luqman finished second and third respectively.
What made this win even more of a feat was the fact that this was Reyhan’s third race of the afternoon. He had run in the 400m heats as well as the 800m final where he claimed a silver. The latter was a mere hour before the 400m final.
Reyhan finished in a time of 51.36 seconds, just 0.08s shy of his personal best of 51.28s set at the recent POL-ITE Track and Field Championships. Guo Pei and Luqman finished in 51.50s and 51.92s respectively.
“I didn’t expect this at all as I was very fatigued from the earlier races so this win is a real shock for me,” said Reyhan. These low expectations may have indeed helped Reyhan achieve this mammoth result. “I had no race plan, there was no pressure. I just ran,” he added.
Silver medallist Guo Pei revealed that this race was not a major event on his season calendar. “I just got back from the SEA Games so this race was more for me to contribute to my school,” said the NTU student.
