Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, February 10, 2014 — Pioneer Secondary continued their rich vein of form with a 49–37 win over Fajar Secondary in the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
Reece Low (Pioneer #15) led all scorers with 23 points, while Jeron Goh (Fajar #7) scored 19 points to lead his team.
Pioneer started the game well as they managed to get good penetration into the paint. Reece (Pioneer #15) got the bulk of his points down low in the block, dominating an undersized Fajar frontline. Jeron (Fajar #7) was the only member of his team who found any success scoring against Pioneer early on, as Reece (Pioneer #15) established his presence in the paint on the defensive end. Even when Fajar managed to get their jumpers off, they mostly rimmed out.
Fajar turned to a half-court press in the second quarter, hoping to disrupt Pioneer’s offence. This proved to be fruitless, as Pioneer penetrated the defence with ease. Fajar’s offence was tepid, only breaking their scoring drought halfway through the quarter. Reece (Pioneer #15) continued his good form, dominating the defensive boards and preventing any Fajar chance at an offensive rebound. His displays propelled his team to a 32–20 lead going into half-time.
In the third quarter, Pioneer turned quality defensive stops into easy points on the other end. This trend continued to the end of the quarter as Fajar were unable to find a way past them.
The last quarter saw Fajar make a mini-run to get themselves back into the game. A three-pointer by Jeron (Fajar #7) saw Fajar cut the lead to 10 points. However, they were let down by bad shooting as many of their shots rimmed out. Pioneer eventually closed out the game with a 49–37 win.
Pioneer captain, Ong Guang Hui (#10) said, “It was a bad game today. We could have done a lot better. Our confidence was not there, as compared to our game against Unity. We have to improve on our passing, communication between teammates as well as being patient with the ball.”
Pioneer will face Nan Hua High in their decisive final game on Friday, February 14, at Clementi Sports Hall, where the victor will secure a second-round spot.
