Jurong East Sports Complex, Friday, March 7, 2014 – In a topsy-turvy battle, Bukit Panjang Government High School emerged with a 29–22 win over Nan Hua High in the final of the West Zone C Division Netball Championship.
This is Bukit Panjang’s second third-place finish in the West Zone. In 2012, they were fourth after a loss to Nanyang Girls’ High School.
Both teams remained neck and neck throughout the first quarter.
It was Nan Hua that settled down early into the game and found their momentum in spurts in the second quarter, where they managed to claim a 14–12 lead at half time.
Tight defense in the midcourt by Bukit Panjang, as well as their strategy of long lobs to their Goal Shooter Chen Xin Ying in the third quarter, proved effective for them. Eventually, Bukit Panjang managed to score 10 goals to end the third quarter with a 22–16 lead.
Nan Hua gave it their all in the closing stages but despite their valiant efforts, left things too late. The shooters from Bukit Panjang successfully made their shots without much difficulty, converting the interceptions by their defenders to win the game 29–22.
Bukit Panjang captain, Ng Shia Bin, said: “I think we were quite composed and played our own game today.”
“Even though we were down at first, we had the mentality to keep fighting,” added co-captain, Ong Xin Ran.
“It was a good fight today,” said Erica Woon, Captain of Nan Hua. “Despite the loss, we will come back stronger during the Nationals.”
