Kallang Diamond, Tuesday, March 11, 2014 — Sakinah (RGS #15) hit a game-winning single in the fifth inning as Raffles Girls’ School clinched third place in the National B Division Girls Softball Championship with a 7–6 win over River Valley High.

This was the second meeting between both teams this season, with River Valley coming out tops in the earlier match 5–2.

River Valley drew first blood at the top of the first inning, a sacrifice fly saw Yiann (RVHS #57) coming home to give them a 1–0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Raffles Girls’ had a chance to score with Cacia Tan (RGS #66) in scoring position with one out. Unfortunately, all Chin Fang (RGS #55) could do was to hit into a double play, ending the inning.

The second inning went by with no significant event for both teams, as both pitchers managed to shut out the opposing batters.

Raffles Girls’ answered back in the bottom of the third inning, putting three runs on the board to take a 3–1 lead. Cacia Tan (RGS #66) started the rally off with a double, bringing home Kai Yun (RGS #37). Chin Fang (RGS #55) then hit a triple to bring home Maisarah (RGS #20), before scoring herself on a wild pitch.

River Valley then scored three in the next inning. Qiyu (RVHS #55) drew a walk to load the bases, putting pressure on the RGS pitcher, Chun Xiao (RGS #22). She cracked at the first batter, walking Qiuwen (RVHS #31) and allowing Yueshan (RVHS #16) to come home to score. Wei Wei (RVHS #98) then hit a double, bringing home Jiazhen (RVHS #67) and Qiyu (RVHS #55).

Raffles tied things up in the bottom of the fourth inning when Zahirah (RGS #88) scored on a fielding error by River Valley.

In the top of the fifth inning, River Valley put two runs up on the board. This meant that RGS had to match that total to send the game into a tie, or surpass it to clinch third place in the championship. With Maisarah (RGS #20) and Chin Fang (RGS #55) on base, Louisa (RGS #15) hit a double to tie the game up at 6–6. Up stepped Sakinah (RGS #31) to the plate, with the RGS bench was cheering loudly as a hit would seal the game. Sakinah (RGS #31) gleefully obliged, hitting the walk-off single and sending her team into a frenzy.

Raffles Girls’ captain, Cacia Tan (#66), said, “I think it was a very exciting game, I am very proud of my team. We could have done better, but we are very happy to have won. When River Valley was ahead, we told ourselves we had nothing to lose and that helped us to the win. We were in the same situation in the previous game, but I am proud that we were able to develop mentally in such a short span. We lost to River Valley 2–5 on home ground a couple of weeks back, so it was good to get the win now.”
