Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, March 24, 2014 — Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) defeated Tanjong Katong Secondary 80–37 in the opening game of the National B Division Basketball Championship.

Misheel Bayaraa (#6) led ACS with 27 points, while Muhammad Naqib (#9) led Tanjong Katong with 19 points.

Tanjong Katong had an impressive opening to the game, as Whilce Lorenzo (#13) capped a 9–0 Tanjong Katong run, forcing ACS to take an early timeout. ACS regrouped during the timeout and switched to a full court defensive press. Off a quick steal from Sherman Seet (#10), a subsequent layup by Koh Jin Quan (#15) gave ACS their first points in the game. Whilce (Tanjong Katong #13) responded with an easy jumper in the paint to keep Tanjong Katong’s nine point (11–2) lead. ACS did not falter as they made several defensive stops to spark a 9–0 run, tying the game at 11 apiece.

Tanjong Katong found no way past the ACS defence as ACS pulled away with an impressive 26–0 onslaught to take a comfortable 37–11 lead in the second quarter. Misheel (ACS #6) was dominating on the defensive end, pulling down several boards for second chance baskets. With just under a minute to play, Naqib (#9) drove into the paint for a layup to end the run. His basket was Tanjong Katong’s only points in the quarter.

In the second half, Tanjong Katong mounted a spirited comeback, led by the playmaking of Naqib (#9) and Whilce (#13). Tanjong Katong stepped up on defence, forcing ACS to take tough contested shots. On the offensive end however, they were met by Misheel (ACS #6) and had trouble converting their attempts in the paint.

In the final two minutes, Misheel (#6) scored eight straight points to seal ACS’s 80–37 victory.

ACS captain, Michael Palero (#7), commented, “I think we did badly in the first quarter. We started out slow, but we got the game back eventually. We focused on our defence and managed to turn it into offensive opportunities.”
