Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, March 25, 2014 — Dunman Secondary (DSS) defeated Queensway Secondary (QSS) 71-28 in the first round of the National B Division Boys Basketball Championship.

Joshua Alas (DSS #7) had a game-high 18 points, while Michael Pacifico (QSS #8) had a team-high 7 points.

Queensway started impressively with a couple of breakaways led by Michael (QSS #8), but soon waned under the dominance of Dunman’s captain Choo Tin Liang (DSS#4). Receiving most of the ball, he made good use of it to set up his teammates Darren Ng (DSS #6) and Joshua Alas (DSS #7). Dunman opened a 28-point gap over their opponents as a result, with Michael (QSS #8) using his bulky frame to quell several dangerous passes in his area.

Late in the second quarter, Jordan Tay (QSS #6) suffered a blow in the chest while in defence, and was substituted.

Queensway went into the second half of the game looking for weaknesses in the Dunman defense to reduce the gap. On the other side, Dunman knew they had to stop making defensive errors while maintaining their scoring streak.

Dunman’s high pressing earned thems easy baskets. Queensway begun with more organised play by communicating better, and managed to create more attacking forays in their opponents half. Up to now, the team had been depending on Michael (QSS #8), as he pressed the Dunman players well and even led with aggressive drives. Queensway’s resistance eventually faded when Michael suffered an awkward fall and limped away with a cramp late in the game.

Dunman will face Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary while Queensway will face Unity in their next Group C matches. Both matches will be held concurrently at Clementi Sports Hall on Friday, March 28, at 1.30pm.
