Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), March 31, Monday, 2014 — Saint Andrews Junior College (SAJC) needed a penalty shootout to beat Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) in the 3rd/4th playoff of the National A Division Girls Water Polo Championship.

Both sides went into a penalty shootout after a 3–3 tie at full time and SAJC prevailed 2–1 through goals by Janessa Png (SAJC #10) and Cheryl Chow (SAJC #3).

The first half was SAJC’s game, as they remained mostly in control of the game. They kept possession of the ball, capitalising on poor marking by ACJC to go 2–0 up. ACJC were also quick on the counter while playing from the back, but saw their floated shots sail away.

Both sides were more evenly matched in the second half, with credit to the ACJC goalkeeper Cleona Zhu (ACJC #1) for shielding her goal to prevent a ruthless SAJC side from scoring more than one goal in the third quarter for a 3–1 lead.

After an ACJC timeout, Cheryl Wong (ACJC #6) saw her long shot effort from midway slice off against the SAJC goalpost. Not long after, ACJC responded with their first goal through Msu Eu Yang (ACJC #11) and this stirred the ACJC supporters. Sharmaine Yeo (ACJC #7) and Fion Lim (ACJC #2) eventually levelled the score at 3–3 for the game to go into a penalty shootout.

ACJC missed their first two penalties while Janessa Png (SAJC #10) converted her chance. It was heartbreak for ACJC when Tee Su Jin (ACJC #4) missed her shot, while Cheryl Chow (SAJC #3) did not miss. Fion Lim (ACJC #2) converted her chance for ACJC but Rachel Ang (SAJC #1) kept out the next ACJC shot to help her school finish third.

SAJC captain, Jasmine Lim (#7), said, “It was God’s grace for us, that although we were tired we still were able to fight really hard. It was a good effort from the team, and we have to credit ACJC for their good fight.”
