Republic Polytechnic, Wednesday, April 2 , 2014 — Methodist Girls’ School (MGS) rode a strong second half to beat CHIJ St. Joseph’s Convent (SJC) 37–31 in the National B Division Girls Netball Championship.
With this win, Methodist Girls’ are through to the next round. They went unbeaten in their group, recording a 3–0 win–loss record.
The first quarter was a tight battle between both teams. MGS’s Goal Shooter made full use of her height to nab high balls, which her defenders were unable to contest. This allowed her to convert easy shots. Despite this, SJC hung close, trailing only by one at the end of the period.
MGS’s Goal Defence and Goal Keeper both did well to contest SJC shots in the second quarter. This gave MGS a comfortable lead, as they held a four-goal lead midway through the quarter. However, SJC again fought back towards the end of the period.
The second half saw MGS open the game entirely. After embarking on a 7–0 run to start the third quarter, MGS never looked back. They were able to hold SJC down until the end of the game, eventually emerging 37–31 winners.
MGS co-captain, Celine Lim, said, “I think both teams put up a really good fight today. We are aiming for the top four this year.”
MGS co-captain, Wen Sze, added, “We were a bit shaky in the first quarter. However, we managed to slow down and play to our pace.”
