Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Tuesday, April 8, 2014 — Tia Louise Rozario of Singapore Sports School set a new meet and national under-15 record of 12.33 seconds to bag her second consecutive girls’ C Division 80 metres hurdles gold medal at the 55th National Inter-School Track & Field Championships.
Tan Jing Wei of Cedar Girls’ Secondary was second with a timing of 12.83s, while Tan Rou Ann of Nanyang Girls’ High finished third in 13.41s.
The C Division meet record of 12.44s was set in 2010 by Jannah Wong, then of CHIJ Katong Convent. Jannah also held the national under-15 mark of 12.37s, which Tia equaled at the Singapore Athletic Association (SAA) Series 2 meet in February.
Tia broke Jannah’s record in the heats with a timing of 12.35s, and subsequently lowered it by another two hundredths of a second in the final.
The 14-year-old commented, “I feel very accomplished because I have been training for it since last year. My coach made me focus on hurdles more than sprinting throughout the year.” The Sports School student credits her result to her coaches who motivated her to outperform herself.
This is Tia’s second gold medal and meet record of the championships. She had earlier won the long jump title with a new meet record of 5.19m. Her best jump of 5.23m was accompanied by a tailwind which was stronger than the allowable limit for record-setting purposes.
