Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Monday, April 14, 2014 — Karin Wong of Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) clinched the girls’ A Division 3000m walk gold medal with a timing of 18 minutes 39.49 seconds at the 55th National Inter-School Track & Field Championships.
Chloe Leong and Natalie Tan completed the podium for HCI, coming in second and third in 18:41.37 and 18:51.03 respectively.
This is the first A Division 3000m walk gold medal for the HCI student. “It feels good because all the hard work paid off. It is quite unreal and surprising actually. I want to thank all my teammates, especially Chloe and Natalie. We walk together all the time and they are very encouraging,” commented Karin.
The A Division 3000m walk record is 17:53.37 and it was set last year by HCI alumna, Tin Shu Min.
The top-three sweep by Hwa Chong enabled them to considerably increase their lead over Victoria Junior College in the divisional title. HCI now take an 11-point lead into the final day of events, which features the 100m, 800m, 4x100m and 4x400m relays for the A division girls.
