Republic Polytechnic, Wednesday, May 14, 2014 — Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) topped their group with a 58–50 win over St. Andrew’s Junior College (SAJC) in the second round of the National A Division Netball Championship. This is the closest margin of victory for ACJC thus far.

The first quarter was a close affair, both teams managed to maintain scoring during their respective possessions. ACJC’s Goal Shooter took advantage of her height to nab high balls over the SAJC Goal Keeper and Goal Defence. This gave ACJC a slight advantage, as she was able to score her shots uncontested. SAJC blinked first, when their Goal Attack missed a shot attempt. This allowed ACJC to score three consecutive goals, giving them a three-point lead.
SAJC kept things close in the second quarter. They had a few chances to trim the deficit when they caused a couple of turnovers. However, their impatience cost them, allowing ACJC to get the ball back each time. By the half-time break, ACJC were up by three points.
Early turnovers by SAJC in the third quarter saw ACJC extend the lead to seven points. ACJC’s defence was solid in the quarter, their Wing Defence and Center were both very active in contesting 50–50 balls. This allowed ACJC to maintain their lead throughout the quarter.
The final quarter saw SAJC go for broke in a an attempt to take back the win. They caused a couple of ACJC turnovers, but were unable to capitalise on them. Eventually, ACJC took the game 58–50. To SAJC’s credit, they are the only team so far to have held ACJC to a single-digit margin of victory.
ACJC captain, Amanda Ng, said, “I felt that it was our biggest challenge. Today was the best effort that we put in to the game so far. We definitely have some mistakes that we can minimise and we hope to do better against our next opponent.”
SAJC captain, Joie, said, “I think our play was good except for some small errors. Our next few trainings will be important preparation for Tuesday’s game against Raffles Institution.”
