Republic Polytechnic, Tuesday, May 27, 2014 — Meridian Junior College (MJC) are through to the final of the National A Division Girls Floorball Championship after beating River Valley High School (RVHS) 4–0. Adeena (#33) and Vannessa Yeo (#21) had two goals apiece.
Both teams seemed content with playing a very physical game, as players could be seen jousting with each other for the ball. MJC drew first blood three minutes into the game, when Vannessa Yeo (#21) was able to put the ball into the net after a goalmouth scramble. After letting in the early goal, RVHS decided to switch keepers. The tactic would pay off as they held MJC scoreless until the final period.
The start of the second period saw MJC captain, Mindy Lim (#6), take a hard fall after a slip. She was subbed out of the game, but was able to recover in time to play later in the game. RVHS did well to maintain possession in this period. Their build-up play was more composed as compared to the first period. This allowed them to generate shots, but they were unable to convert.
RVHS’s keeper was rock-solid throughout the game, but MJC finally found the key to beating her in the third period. Adeena (MJC #33) was able to fire a shot in after her team mate set her up with a nice cross-court pass from the left wing. She then repeated the feat a couple of minutes later, with a carbon copy goal.
As time wound down, Vannessa (MJC #21) came in to score her second goal. She caught the RVHS defence napping and hit a laser shot down the middle, past the RVHS keeper. MJC took the 4–0 win after an intense and physical match. They will now face Yishun Junior College for the title on Thursday, May 29, at Bedok Sports Hall.
MJC captain, Mindy Lim (#6), said, “I think it was a really intense match. The girls did really well in constantly shooting and generating opportunities. Our defence was good as well, as we managed to keep a clean sheet. Hopefully we will do even better in the final. We were not deterred when the RVHS keeper made saves. It did not stop us from creating chances or our centers from shooting.”
