Physical Education and Sports Education Branch, Saturday, 7 June, 2014 — Singapore Schools Team B (U-16) brought down Combined Schools (Poly) 23–0 in the group stages of the National Tertiary Rugby Tournament. This is the second game for both teams in the group stage.

This mini tournament features the cream of the crop from the A and B Division rugby tournaments and also the polytechnics and ITE. There are four teams participating: Singapore Schools (U18), Singapore Schools (U16), Combined Schools (Polytechnic) and Combined ITE.

Within the first five minutes, Combined Schools (Poly) saw good efforts from Riq Harriz (#15) and Yu Sing (#16) but the strong defensive efforts put up by Singapore Schools prevented then from scoring.

Singapore Schools then stepped up their game and began to secure a lot more possession, but failed to convert offensively.

For Combined Schools, Riq Harriz (#15) registered a couple of good runs but did not manage to score, as he was brought down just in time by his defenders.

Just before the first half ended, Singapore Schools were awarded a penalty due to a Combined Schools offside. They converted successfully to take a 3–0 lead.

In the second half, Daniel Lee (#2) of Singapore Schools broke through to score the first try for his team (8–0). Combined Schools’ Leow Jing Kang (#12) anticipated Daniel’s run and tried to stop him near the goal line, but Daniel continued to charge forward. Asyraff Azalan (#23) of Combined Schools eventually brought down Daniel but could not stop the try.

Shortly after, Daniel (#2) scored another one for his team following an assist from teammate Joshua Goh (#10). They missed their second conversion of the game to lead 13–0.

Fabien Wee (#6) score the third try of the game to up Singapore Schools’ lead to 18–0.

Thereafter, Singapore Schools were awarded a penalty, but Joshua (#10) failed to convert the kick.

With 10 minutes remaining, Irfan Bin Nusri (#19) of Singapore Schools stole the ball from the ruck and made a 10-metre dash towards the goal line to score the fourth try and confirm a 23–0 win over Combined Schools to register their second win of the tournament.

Singapore Schools captain, Joshua (#10), said, “I think we played tremendously well, especially since we are short of men. The weather is scorching hot but we did a good job and played well as a unit, given that this is our second time playing together. It was a well deserved win and we have the ability to achieve greater wins.”
