Jurong West Sports Centre, Monday, June 9, 2014 — A group of 22 children aged 6 to 14 got the chance to learn the fundamentals of different sports in a fun way at a five-day ActiveSG June Holiday Sports Camp.

ActiveSG is one of the recommendations of Vision 2030, an initiative that aims to provide affordable programmes for Singaporeans of all ages and levels.

During the duration of the camp, participants were introduced to the various basic techniques and elements of four different sports – football, basketball, floorball and board games. Throughout the camp, participants were also trained to be disciplined and to take responsibility for the sports equipment that were assigned to them.

Into its second edition, the camp is managed by conveners from Sport Singapore, and instructed by coaches from APSM, a local multi-sport provider.

“He was very anxious and he had been waiting to come for the camp,” said Shaista Atiq, who registered her eight-year-old son, Salahuddin, for the camp. “I’m very happy to see him play and enjoy playing the different sports and learning different skills.”

The 40-year-old housewife added, “It’s a very nice programme, because they have board games planned for the children as well. This makes the programme very balanced, so the children can learn both physical and mental skills.”

The camp was carefully structured by trained coaches for each sport. For each sport, sessions were 90 minutes long, with plenty of breaks allocated to ensure that the participants remained hydrated. Meals were also provided for all participants.

Thomas Khoman, 43, registered his son, Matthias Khoman, 8, for the camp. “I knew about the programme via the ActiveSG website,” he said. “I wanted to provide him with some activities to spend his time, primarily because it’s the school holidays. And here, he gets to mingle around with other children, and he can also gain some exposure outside school.”

Just like Thomas, Athena Liew, registered her daughter, Claire Liew, for the camp, after finding out about the programme through the ActiveSG website. “I think the programme is quite comprehensive and it is not very expensive as well,” said Athena. At six years old, Claire is the youngest participant of the camp.

“I think the camp would be able to equip her with some good fundamental skills to prepare for PE classes,” added the 34-year-old PE teacher at Boon Lay Secondary. “I want her to learn some social skills and mingle around, because these are very important for life.”
