Bukit Gombak Sports Centre, Wednesday, June 11, 2014 — A group of 18 children aged 4 to 12 got the chance to learn basic basketball skills in a fun way at a two-day ActiveSG introductory basketball camp.

ActiveSG is one of the recommendations of Vision 2030, an initiative that aims to provide affordable programmes for Singaporeans of all ages and levels.

The camp is managed by a convener from Sport Singapore, and instructed by coaches from SG Basketball Academy, a local basketball service provider.

“I think it’s a very meaningful thing to get the kids to come down and pick up some skills during their school holidays,” said Eric Chu, programme director at SG Basketball Academy. “I think Sport Singapore is doing a good job by getting more people involved in sports. The name of ActiveSG speaks for itself, where the movement encourages Singaporeans to be active.”

The 36-year-old added, “As a nation, we are trying to get more people to be involved in sports and to be more active. For kids who are not going abroad for holidays, getting them to come for such camps, be it basketball or other sports, is a good thing overall rather than to have them stay at home and play computer games.”

The two-day basketball camp was structured to cater to participants aged 12 and below. During the duration of the camp, participants were introduced to the various basic elements of the sport. Participants learned to make simple passes, dribble the ball on both hands, shoot the ball, and execute simple defensive movements.

Sean Chia said, “It’s the school holidays and I want him to take part in sports that allow him to interact with his peers and expose him to the values of teamwork.” The 40-year-old father registered his five-year-old son, Kyan Chia, for the camp.

Pamela Siow registered her son, Andre Wong, 8, for the camp. “He has some interest in basketball, so I thought of letting him come here to try out the sport,” said Pamela. “Hopefully he can focus his attention on learning one single sport seriously. He has also went for taekwondo and swimming classes.”

“He is also very active, and basketball is a very physical sport, so that will help use up more of his energy,” laughed the 43-year-old mother.

Another edition of the basketball camp will be held in the following week, on June 18 and 19, at Clementi Sports Centre. The camp will feature more advanced elements and techniques.
