Jurong West Sports Centre, Wednesday, June 18, 2014 — During the ActiveSG football camp, a group of children aged 8 to 12 got the opportunity to pick up basic football skills during the June school holidays.

ActiveSG is one of the recommendations of Vision 2030, an initiative that aims to provide affordable programmes for Singaporeans of all ages and levels.

The camp is managed and instructed by conveners and coaches from Sport Singapore.

“These boys are very enthusiastic about playing football,” said Terry Pathmanathan, who coaches the participants. “I think the programme lets the children enjoy and get away from the books. It’s a good break away from their regular routine and whatever they have been doing, to come here and sweat it out.”

The 58-year-old was impressed with the participants. Pathmanathan added, “These boys are very enthusiastic about playing football. Even under the heat, the boys are really pushing themselves, running and listening to the instructions we give. It’s good as these boys need football as a recreational activity for a start.”

The three-day football camp equipped participants with basic elements and knowledge of the sport. Participants learned to make simple passes, dribble the ball, and execute simple offensive and defensive movements.

Surej Rangasamy said, “I wanted him to have some physical activity that encompasses discipline and cardio workout.” The 43-year-old father registered his nine-year-old son, Arjun, for the camp. “I think the programme is good to let the children pick up the skills and I’m happy to see him enjoy himself when he’s playing out there in the field.”
