PESEB, Monday, June 30, 2014 — Peirce Secondary (PSS) started their season with a 39–33 win over Mayflower Secondary (MFS) in the first round of the South Zone C Division Basketball Championship.
The win puts Peirce Secondary joint-top of Group D along with Catholic High. Both teams sport identical 1–0 win-loss records.
Pierce took control of the game in the first half, before Mayflower came storming back in the second half.
The first quarter started off slowly, as both teams struggled to score. Mayflower scored a single point in the first four minutes of the game. However, Peirce found their footing in the game, going on an 8–0 run to put them up by seven points at the end of the period.
Mayflower were able to score more in the second quarter, but they still found themselves down by 10 points going into the second half.
The third quarter saw some signs of life from Mayflower, as they trimmed the deficit to single digits a couple of times. MFS (#13) did well to keep his team in the game by making timely blocks on Peirce players.
Mayflower came to life in the final period, as they went on a 6–0 run to pull within two points of Peirce. This prompted the Peirce coach to call a timeout in a bid to stem the comeback. This proved to be successful, as Peirce hung on to eventually win 39–33.
Peirce will next face Catholic High on Wednesday, July 2 at 5pm.
Peirce captain, Ryan Tan (#10), said, “We aim to top our group this year. Our defence was quite poor, as we allowed Mayflower to cut in easily. We need to communicate more and tighten the defence faster. We face Catholic High next. They thrashed us last year, but we hope to do our best and hold them down.”
