Physical and Sports Education Branch, Wednesday, July 16, 2014 — Fairfield Methodist School (FMS) are through to the final of the South Zone C Division Boys Volleyball Championship after beating Ang Mo Kio Secondary (AMK) 2–0 (25–14, 25–5).
Fairfield Methodist School will face Catholic High in the final, while Ang Mo Kio will meet Zhong Hua Secondary School in the third/fourth play-off.
Fairfield scored three points straight to open the scoring for the first set. Strong spikes by Luc Yi Ming Belanger (FMS #7) widen their lead to 9-2, before a series of mistakes let Ang Mo Kio narrow the difference to 9–7. With Fairfield being more focused in the game, they managed to score five more unanswered spikes to lead 14-7. Fairfield managed to maintain a six point until it was 16–11. They proceeded to take the first set 25-14.
Fairfield capitalised on good serves by Luc (FMS #7) to push their lead to 0–12 in the second set. Midway through the game, Toh Pin An (AMK #2)’s spike clinched the first point for his team, and Catholic High’s ball found the net to bring the score to 13–2.
Ang Mo Kio’s string of mistakes thereafter allowed Fairfield to score seven more points. Well-coordinated in their plays, Fairfield repeatedly threatened Ang Mo Kio with their attacks.
Fairfield made a few mistakes later in the set, but a defensive block by Kaiyan Wang (FMS #17) and good team effort allowed them to gradually pulled away. From there, they managed to maintain their lead to take the set 25–5.
Fairfield Methodist School’s captain Luc Belanger (#7) said, “We put in our best as a team, and we all wanted to win. I think we have to work on our communication and take more initiative to go for the ball.”
