PESEB, Friday, August 1, 2014 — Greenridge Secondary (GRS) overcame a slow start to beat Evergreen Secondary (EVG) 60–5 in the group stages of the National C Division Boys Rugby (Bowl) Championship. Three Greenridge players led their team with two tries a piece, while Muhammad Amir (EVG #7) scored a consolation try for Evergreen.

Both teams started the game off evenly as they traded possession. The breakthrough came when Muhammad Rauf (GRS #4) dove over the line for the first try. Syafiq B Safawi (GRS #15) followed up with a great try, shaking off three defenders to score.

At this point, Evergreen’s defence collapsed as they allowed Greenridge to score try after try. Clumsy mistakes by Evergreen saw them concede territory to Greenridge easily.

Muhammad Aizuddin (GRS #7), Atif Akash (GRS #10) and Brendan Edward Raj (GRS #14) all added tries for Greenridge before the half and they went into the break nursing a comfortable 31–0 lead.

Evergreen started the second half with most of the possession early on, however they were unable to turn that advantage into a try. Syafiq B Safawi (GRS #15) got Greenridge up and running again when he broke through the Evergreen defence for an easy try.

Evergreen’s solitary consolation in the half came when Muhammad Amir (EVG #7) scored a try after some good work from his teammates to set him up. From that point on, Greenridge continued to pound against their line. They eventually put three more tries past before the end of the game, taking the 58–5 win.

Greenridge captain, Brendan Edward Raj (#14), said, “We played really well as a team. We dominated at the start and persevered to the end. We hope that we can become the bowl champions.”
