Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, August 6, 2014 — Dunman Secondary recorded a 47–41 victory over Swiss Cottage Secondary in their opening game of the National C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.
Gabriel Tan (#7) led the East Zone champions with a game-high 14 points while Mohammad Yousuf (#11) and Mohamed Afiq (#6) scored 12 and 11 points respectively for Swiss Cottage.
Dunman’s defence prevented Swiss Cottage from penetrating into the restricted area throughout the opening quarter. Gabriel Tan (#7) knocked down a jumper to give Dunman a 13–6 lead at the end of the quarter.
Mohamed Afiq (#6) and Mohammad Yousuf (#11) were the focal point of Swiss Cottage’s offence in the second quarter, combining for several steals off Dunman turnovers. With just 30 seconds remaining in the quarter, Rylan Wah (#5) tied the game at 18 apiece with a three-pointer. Dunman responded through Jaiditya Sharma (#15), who’s and-one basket gave Dunman a 20–18 lead to head into the second half.
In the opening seconds of the third quarter, Rylan Wah (#5) tied the game at 20. Subsequently, Nigel Tan (#13) sparked a 10–0 Dunman run with two three-pointers to extend Dunman’s lead to 10. In the closing minutes of the third quarter, Swiss Cottage reduced the deficit to five points through an 8–0 run of their own. Mohammad Yousuf (#11) recorded four straight steals to fuel the run.
Tang Qi Xiang (#12) stepped up in the final quarter to score seven of Swiss Cottage’s final points, but was unable to turn the tide of the game as Dunman held on for the 47–41 victory.
Dunman captain, Koh Jun Hao (#10), said, “We played badly today. When Swiss Cottage executed a full court press, we didn’t know what to do. Our coach was also angry with us because we didn’t control the ball properly and that cost us a lot of turnovers. We’ll look to improve our ball handling and our transition offence when opponents execute a full court press.”
Mohamed Afiq (Swiss Cottage #6) said, “It’s hard when you go up against a stronger opponent like Dunman today. But we played our game and we had good teamwork. I hope we can win our next game against North Vista.”
Dunman will next face Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road), while Swiss Cottage will play North Vista Secondary on Tuesday, Aug 12, 2014. Both games will be played at Clementi Sports Hall at 4 p.m.
