OCBC Arena, Thursday, August 28, 2014 — Nanyang Girls’ High (NYGH) ended a year-long wait to vanquish their demons when they clinched the National C Division Girls Basketball Championship with an emphatic 59–37 win over Anglican High (AHS).
This was a rematch of last year’s final, where Nanyang Girls’ held the lead at halftime before Anglican High stormed back to win 44–37.
Tan Qi Qing (NYGH #12) and Adeline Wong (NYGH #7) combined to score 33 points, while Carissa Chan (AHS #7) paced her team with 19 points.

Adeline (NYGH #7) helped ease Nanyang into the game by making two three-pointers in the period. Anglican High had trouble with scoring in the paint, as each time they put up a shot it would rim out. Nanyang Girls’ nursed a 14–5 lead heading into the second period.
The second quarter saw Anglican High come back behind the scoring of Carissa Chan (AHS #7). She was nigh unstoppable, as she muscled her defenders out of the way to score. Carissa was able to pour in 12 points in the quarter, helping Anglican High trim the deficit to one point.
Nanyang Girls’ managed to maintain their lead thanks to the front court duo of Han Xing Yue (NYGH #11) and Qi Qing (NYGH #12), as both players made stops that prevented Anglican High from taking the lead.
Nanyang threw the game open in the second half, as they managed to successfully contain the scoring of Carissa Chan (AHS #7). They held Carissa to only six points in the third period, while scoring 19 points to give them a comfortable 12-point lead. The
Nanyang funneled Carissa’s drive into their frontcourt duo of Qi Qing (NYGH #12) and Xing Yue (NYGH #11), where both players would use their height and long arms to force tough shots.
Adeline Wong (NYGH #7) started off the final quarter with a three-pointer. Nanyang were able to pad their lead while preventing Anglican High from scoring in the pain. Carissa Chan (AHS #7) was seen trying to will her team back with her drives, but the lead was too big for her to overcome on her own. Nanyang eventually took the game 59–37, sealing their first ever National C Division Girls Basketball title.
Nanyang Girls’ captain, Adeline Wong (#7), said, “The match was extremely exhilarating. Our desire to win fueled us throughout the game. The fundamentals our coach taught us, including the fact that we kept calm throughout the match, was the reason for our win today. I hope that we can improve our overall performance next year. We’ll aim for zonal champions first, then take it one game at a time from there.”
