Story by Leslie Tan.
After a final two days of frenzied voting that saw the lead change hands a few times, the picture of Samuel Cheong of Gongshang Primary finally emerged as the winner of the Picture of the Year 2007 contest.
Chosen entirely by readers’ votes, the contest started quietly a month ago with Samuel Cheong’s picture soon in a comfortable lead. It stayed that way for a long time until December 19 when Jocelyn Ng’s picture started surging up the rankings to take over the lead. For the next four days, Jocelyn’s picture proved a tough competitor, always keeping ahead of Samuel’s picture. Her picture lost the lead once or twice but her supporters would soon vote her back into the lead.
And so it stayed that way until 11:00 p.m. on December 23, one hour to go before the poll was to close. The voting then exploded. With one last huge push, a massive show of voting support surged through the fibre optic cables to drive Samuel Cheong’s picture inexorably into the lead. From trailing by 10 votes, Samuel Cheong’s picture started to pull away dramatically from his nearest competitor to lead by 33 at one point. Fighting back, Jocelyn Ng’s supporters narrowed the deficit down to 25. But the voting bloc standing solidly behind Samuel Cheong’s picture was too potent for anyone to take and the picture finally romped home as the winner by an impressive 57 votes.
Voting Statistics:
Samuel Cheong’s picture: 713 votes
Jocelyn Ng’s picture: 656
Total number of votes cast: 2,369
Total number of voters: 1,795
Most bizarre campaign line in the chat box: “Ice Kacang is Samuel’s fave food. Vote for Samuel!”
Funniest comment in the chat box: “this day is the day i pressed the most refresh buttons in my whole life…”

future team sg hurdler? anyway hurdling is awesome. They always impress me at Nationals. I mean, everyone sprints but hurdling takes a lot of technique even for a fresh athlete to do a race. Anyway, being in mid-air makes him look kungfu-ish. 😀
Everyone here is a winner indeed, there is no loser! If not, none of us will be born, right? Ask your parents and teachers to explain if you do not understand…
Oh no, I’m going back to Biology class again? In fact, I like all the pics posted in this redsports web, the photographers are really the winners behind the nominees! I never had a good camera and photography skill since birth but I know how to admire good photographers! Well, like the old saying, “To each his own!”. Just try our best to capture the best moments in life!
actually Samuel’s jump is nice you see netball girls play everyday
but it’s not easy to see a perfect close up jump like Samuel’s.
and just like i said the photographer is awesome

Congratulations Samuel on winning the Picture of the year 2007 :)! And thank you suppporters :DDD love you all! People, rmb to show your support for the Youth Olympic Games Bid !
Even though i didn’t vote, i still feel that Samuel photo is alot better than Jocelyn’s. Comparing the backgrounds / colors / objects / photoshop / campaign line and difficulties of capturing the shots. In comparison Jocelyn’s photo seems plain and common, and who can resist voting for a kid jumping over a beam 😉 anyway congratulations to Samuel and thanks for showing us your candied photo, i personally would have killed the photographer 😉
Great comments Dick Yip. Yes. the idea was fantastic as it generates a lot of input which is good for everyone’s interest in school sports. Competition always draw the best spirit from both sportsmen/women and spectators.
Redsports is a definite GO!
Watching for the next Big Leap!
jocelyn has a nicer jump than samuel lol
Congratulations to Samuel Cheong of Gongshang Primary for being voted Best Picture of the Year! IMO, there is no loser. Everyone involved won …as this online voting is a new and valuable experience for all who participated. It must have created much pre-Christmas excitement in the homes of both camps of supporters, with SMS, e-mails and frantic phone calls to garner more support, right to the 11th hour. All this, despite there being no tangible prize! But the intangible prize is the tremendous amount of support shown, including that for Jocelyn Ng of YCK Sec. It spoke volumes for all involved.
I must congratulate Les for coming up with this idea.
For me, Redsports is a winner too and can only get better from here on.
