Singapore Institute of Management, Wednesday, September 18, 2014 — Defending Singapore University Games (SUniG) champions National University of Singapore (NUS) defeated Nanyang Technological University (NTU) 3–0 (26–24, 25–22, 25–11) in the final game of their season. NUS won all four of their games to retain the Men’s Volleyball title.
NTU took the early lead but could not hold on to it, conceding points through their own errors. Yew Zi Wei (#13) and Brandon Phua (#17) anchored the NUS offence, as they facilitated several points to keep NUS ahead.
Tan Ting Yong (#4) and Heng Yong Jie (#9) responded for NTU on the defensive end, denying several NUS spikes. A spike by Goh Jun Rui (#11) tied the set at 24 apiece, but NUS pulled away with two quick points to take the first set with a score of 26–24.
NUS went on a 7–1 run to establish their foothold early in the second set. After a few rallies, NTU reduced the deficit to three points. NUS responded with another 8–0 run to extend the lead to 18–10. Sparked by an impressive block by Heng Yong Jie (#9), NTU went on a 7–0 run of their own to trail by just a single point. Brandon Phua (#17) was instrumental for NUS, as his powerful spikes helped NUS clinch the second set with a score of 25–22.
The final set belonged to NUS, as they easily clinched the final set with a score of 25–11, without much resistance from a visibly fatigued NTU squad.
NUS captain, Samuel Ng (#7), said, “It definitely feels good to defend the title. Our target was the championship and I’m glad we managed to do it.”
With the victory, NUS have completed their season. NTU, with a 1–2 win-loss record, will next face Singapore Management University (SMU) in the closing game of the SUniG Men’s Volleyball season. The game will be played on September 19, 8.30 p.m., at Singapore Institute of Management.
