Jurong West Sports Hall, Friday, January 23, 2015 — River Valley High (RVH) beat Westwood Secondary (WWS) 46–30 to bag a second win in the first round of the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
The game started off with an evenly-balanced first quarter, as both teams took turns to add points onto the scoreboard. River Valley managed to gain a one-point (8–7) lead at the end of the quarter.
River Valley emerged stronger in the second quarter as they stepped up both offensively and defensively. Westwood struggled as they were unable to get the ball beyond the half-court mark. This resulted in several turnovers and as such, River Valley managed to extend their lead effortlessly, putting up an 20–2 scoring run for the quarter.
In the third quarter, Westwood changed completely. They became more aggressive and managed to break through River Valley’s defence. Chai Zhi Xun (WWS #7) and Law Jun Hong (WSS #6) did well and managed to pool together nine points to outscore River Valley 14–6.
The final quarter saw River Valley regain control of the game while Westwood fought to pull the game close. Unfortunately, the deficit was too large and the game ended with River Valley taking the 46–30 victory.
With this win, River Valley hold a 2–1 win-loss record while Westwood have lost their third straight game.
River Valley High’s captain, Lin Bak Hin (#14), said, “We did quite well in the first two quarters, our defence locked them down. However we let them come back in the third quarter and never picked up the tempo.”
Westwood’s captain, Chai Zhi Xun (#7), said, “We played well and tried our best. We lack a tall center but we played better compared to previous games. ”
River Valley will face Yuan Ching Sec at 1.45 p.m. on Thursday, January 29, while Westwood Sec will play New Town Sec at 4.15 p.m. on Tuesday, February 3. Both games will be played at Jurong West Sports Hall.
