Republic Polytechnic Sports Complex, Thursday, February 5, 2015 — Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) defeated Yio Chu Kang (YCK) 30–10 in the preliminary round of the North Zone C Division Netball Championship.

SCGS, who finished in the top eight in last year’s South Zone Championship, were transferred to North Zone this year.

The win puts SCGS at the top of Group D with a 3–0 win-loss record, while YCK dropped to a 3–1 win-loss record. Yio Chu Kang will need to defeat Evergreen and Woodlands Secondary in order to proceed to the second round as runners-up.

SCGS found their momentum early into the game to lead 6–1 after the first quarter as they utilised precise passes to advance the ball towards the goal circle.

SCGS’ Goal Shooter, Natalie Ong, started off the second quarter with three consecutive points to make it 9–1. She played a vital role in pacing her team’s offensive plays with her high conversion rate, allowing SCGS to pull away to 24–8 going into the halftime break.

Natalie obliged her team with a 100 percent shooting accuracy in the second quarter, converting all of her eight attempts on the first try.

Yio Chu Kang stepped up their defence in the third quarter, in an attempt to deny their opponents’ passes to their shooters. Their diligent defence allowed them to limit SCGS scoring opportunities, and they were outscored just 7–5.

However, it was Natalie who dominated with her shot accuracy to allow her team to take a 16-point lead going into the final quarter.

Keen to narrow the sgap, Yio Chu Kang continued to give their opponents a strong fight and tried their best to upset SCGS’ flow and composure. However, a 6–2 final quarter wrapped up the 30–10 win for SCGS.

Yio Chu Kang’s captain, Rebecca Kang, said, “We did well today and manage to make several interceptions. However, we need to work on the shot accuracy of our shooters.”

Commenting on her opponents’ play, she added, “SCGS played well. Their attacks were smooth and they put up a tight defence.”

Claire Lee, captain of SCGS, said, “I think Yio Chu Kang were really good opponents. They displayed great sportsmanship and put up a tough fight.”

“We played better in the 2nd quarter. We were more focused and our passes were more effective.” She added.
