Dunman Secondary School, Tuesday, February 10, 2015 — Coral Secondary (CRL) defeated Ping Yi Secondary (PYS) 36–12 for their second win in Group A of the East Zone B Division Netball Championship.

The win gives Coral a 2–2 win-loss record, while Ping Yi complete their season with a 1–5 win-loss record. Coral defeated Chung Cheng High (Main) 32–18 in their previous match and will be playing against East View for their final game.

Both teams failed to qualify for the second round while Greenview and Tanjong Katong Secondary will proceed as the top two teams of Group A.

Faced with good defensive efforts from Coral, Ping Yi missed their shots and lacked possession. Ping Yi’s Goal Attack, Vanessa, managed to put in the second point for her team towards the end of the first quarter by drawing a penalty shot. With good ball movement round the court, Coral capitalized on Ping Yi’s mistakes to take a 11–2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Coral players easily located their Goal Shooter, Jodie, in the circle with well-executed passes from the midfielders. She was dominant offensively with her accuracy at the net, contributing to nine out of the 10 goals scored in this quarter. Coral went on a 10–3 scoring run to pull away to lead 21–5 going into the halftime break.

Passes were made with much effort from the defensive court to the offensive end, but the ball never quite made it into the goal circle for Ping Yi. This was due to frivolous unforced errors like stepping or repossession. Coral put in 14 goals this quarter, scoring on several offensive rebounds and extended their lead to 35–5.

Ping Yi impressed the crowd as they came back with a commendable team effort in the last quarter to gradually pick up points.

Ping Yi’s GS, Narjeesa, kicked off the final quarter with three consecutive points to trail 8–35. She shook off her defenders to reach open spaces and converted efficiently in the goal circle. The Ping Yi defenders communicated well and fought hard to gain possession of the ball, making several interceptions in the centre third that were converted into points.

Their tightened defence allowed Coral to score only one goal in this quarter. Despite Ping Yi’s valiant efforts to reduce the deficit, Coral’s strong first-half effort helped them to the eventual 36–12 victory.

Coral’s captain, Shi Ting, said, “I felt that my team played better in the first half. Ping Yi put up a good fight today, they displayed good sportsmanship and they didn’t give up till the final whistle.”

Ping Yi’s captain, Hui Ru, said, “We took a while to settle down into the game. I was satisfied with my team’s play in the last quarter as we beat them 7–1. I’m proud of my teammates for not giving up.”

“Most of us started playing netball together only in Secondary One. We’ve came so far and grew together as a team. I’m glad to have went through this journey with all of them,” she added.
