River Valley High School, Friday, February 13, 2015 — Nanyang Girls’ High earned a sixth consecutive win when they defeated Pioneer Secondary 54–4 in the preliminary round of the West Zone B Division Netball Championship.

Nanyang Girls’ dominated in the games previously played against Hong Kah, Dunearn, Clementi Town, Jurongville and Hillgrove with scores of 61–4, 51–1, 28–11, 34–10 and 39–12 respectively. The third-seeded team will continue on to the second round of the championship, after proving to be a strong contender in the competition so far.

Nanyang Girls went on a 16–0 scoring run in the first quarter, leaving Pioneer unable to score as they found difficulty in breaking through Nanyang Girls’ tight defence. Together with the swift centre passes and high-accuracy shots made by Celine Poh (Goal Shooter) and Clara Lim (Goal Attack) at the net, Nanyang Girls’ dominated in full force, scoring relentlessly.

In the second quarter, Pioneer stepped up on their offence and managed to garner three points slowly throughout the game. However, Nanyang Girls’ were tough to beat as they maintained their momentum and continued with their solid passing and intercepting. This was led by Jane Wong (Wing Attack) who displayed impressive footwork, creating a strong on-court support. The quarter ended with a 30–3 lead to Nanyang Girls’.

Into the third quarter, Pioneer began to tire out while they struggled to keep up. Nonetheless, the Pioneer players fought hard and made several efforts to defend and intercept, most notably by Lisney (Centre). Despite that, Pioneer faced a scoring drought as Nanyang Girls’ kept up their team play and good rebounding. Hence, Nanyang Girls’ gained a larger lead of 45–3 at the end of the quarter.

The final quarter saw Nanyang Girls’ Poh (Goal Shooter) and Lim (Goal Attack) work together well despite several misses at the net. The powerful rebounding displayed by the two still allowed them to score nine points. Nanyang Girls’ eventually finished as 54–4 winners.

Nanyang Girls’ captain, Kelly Tan said, “We worked as a team today. The support off-court was very loud and likewise, it was very good on-court.”

While Nanyang Girls’ will advance to the second round of the championship, Pioneer will continue to their last game in round one as they play Hillgrove Secondary on Monday, February 16, 2015, at 1.00 p.m. The game will take place at Jurong West Sports Hall.
