PESEB, Thursday, March 5, 2015 — In a game marred by three lightning alerts, rugby powerhouses Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) topped brother school Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) 49–0 in their preliminary round game of the National B Division Rugby Championship.
For ACS (Barker Road), the loss drops them to a 1–1 win-loss record. With the win, ACS(I) improve to 2–1. ACS(I) went down 10–15 to defending champions St. Andrew’s Secondary in their previous game.
ACS(I) demonstrated their superiority throughout the game through easy penetrations against ACS (Barker Road)’s defence. Within minutes, ACS(I) took the lead through a try by fly-half Nicholas Wong (#10) and a conversion by Matthew Robinson (#21).
However, the lightning alert stopped play.
Upon resumption, led by openside flanker Joshua Lee (#7), Lim Shern (#9) extended ACS(I)’s lead with the second try of the game. The scrum-half’s try sparked a 21–0 run, giving ACS(I) a comfortable 35–0 lead to end the half.
Two lightning alerts marred the second half, with one delaying the start of the second half.
Mohammad-Mikha Khaleel (#1) opened the scoring in the second half with a 40-yard sprint, outmuscling the ACS (Barker Road) defence for the try.
ACS (Barker Road) held their ground in the frame, as they denied several ACS(I) drives and threatened ACS(I) with several line-outs.
Late in the half, an ACS (Barker Road) turnover allowed Muhammad Darwisy (#27) to execute a 60-yard sprint for the final try of the game. Robinson (#21) converted to give ACS(I) the 49-point advantage before the third lightning alert put a full-stop to the game.
Joshua Lee (#7) said, “ACS (Barker Road) put up a really good fight and they were much stronger than we expected. Hats off to them. They played really really well. Despite the score, our plays were still very rusty. We were just lucky to get past their defence.”
The ACS(I) captain added, “We have a lot to improve on and we’re very far from our full potential. I believe we have to work a lot harder if we want to beat Saints again in the semi-final or the final.”
ACS(I) will next face SJI at 4.30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10, while ACS (Barker Road) will face Raffles Institution in the earlier game at 3.00 p.m. Both games will be played at PESEB.
