Bukit Gombak Stadium, Monday, April 20, 2015 — Matz Chan (#204) of Raffles Institution claimed his first C Division boys’ 400m hurdles title when he clocked a timing of 1 minute and 2.87 seconds at the 56th National Inter-School Track and Field Championships.
He and Gerad Loh (#401) of Hwa Chong Institution were neck-and-neck until the very end. Matz Chan emerged victorious, finishing just 0.01s before Gerad.
“Actually, at the start of the race, I was a bit doubtful that I would win since I’m only in Secondary 1 and also, since the rest of my competitors are also very strong. My father encouraged me a lot and I had also trained quite hard for it. So, before the race, I tried not to think of anything. I had faith, had confidence and prayed. I was very determined to win. During the race, I made a mistake of starting really quickly. Although I heard my competitor and good friend, Gerad, was quite near me, I tried my best all the way,” piped Matz.
The result is Matz’s new personal best. He smashed his previous timing by five seconds. He will also be participating in the 4x100m relay and the 4x400m relay this Wednesday at Choa Chu Kang Stadium.
