PESEB, Thursday, May 7, 2015 — Powerhouses St. Andrew’s Junior College (SAJC) scored all their points in the first half in a 17–0 semi-final victory over Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) to secure a spot in the final of the National A Division Rugby Championship.
The first half of the game was played on Tuesday, May 5, and the second half had to be adjourned due to lightning risks.
Within the first 10 minutes of the opening half, the Saints were awarded two penalties, but Vickneshwaran Supramaniam (#7) was unable to convert both attempts.
Just three minutes later, ACJC’s momentary defensive lapse allowed Adley Goh (#13) to break past for a 50-yard sprint for the first try of the game. Vickneshwaran (#7) converted to give the Saints the early 7–0 lead.
Later in the half, SAJC had another opportunity to further extend their lead through a penalty, but the attempt by Vickneshwaran (#7) was off the mark.
However, in the following possession, Dedrick Lim (#11) managed to break past ACJC’s defence on the right flank for the game’s second try.
With under a minute to play, off a line-out right in front of ACJC’s try line, Ryan Ong (#2) managed to push past the defence for the final try of the game, giving SAJC the 17–0 lead.
After the resumption of the second half, ACJC managed to hold their ground against their stronger opponents, but were unable to break through the Saints’ defence and force a comeback. Despite their spirited efforts, they eventually went down 0–17.
In the other semi-final, defending champions Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) trounced Raffles Institution 37–0.
SAJC and ACS(I) will meet in the final, which will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 4.15 p.m. at the Home Team Academy. ACJC and RI will play in the bronze medal playoff, which will be held on Monday, May 11, 4.15 p.m. at PESEB.
