National Stadium, Friday, June 12, 2015 — Hannah Lee completed her Games debut on a high after securing the bronze medal in the women’s discus throw final at the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. Hannah’s season’s best throw of 45.72m was completed on her first attempt.
Despite winning the bronze, Hannah was slightly disappointed with her performance as she was hoping for a silver.
Hannah, who has a personal best of 45.91m, was locked into second place after four attempts, but Malaysia’s Yap Jeng Tzan out-threw her in the fifth and sixth attempts. As a result, Hannah had to settle for bronze.
On her performance, Hannah said, “(I’m feeling) a mixture of emotions. I can’t say that I’m absolutely happy and excited about what I’ve done… I really wanted the silver medal and I came here ready to fight for it. I gave it everything that I could and I played my cards right but it wasn’t good enough for a silver medal.”
Nonetheless, Hannah was thankful for the home support.
She said, “It is great. I can’t ask for a better way to start my SEA Games journey. It was great having my family and friends watch me throw because they’ve been through the entire journey with me. For them to be here to witness my first time at the SEA Games, I think it is amazing. This is a dream come true.”
Compatriot Zhang Guirong could not match her gold-winning performance at the women’s shot put final on Wednesday after she bowed out early in the competition.
Guirong, the silver medallist at the previous Games, sprained her ankle during her first attempt and could not finish. Guirong still holds the women’s discus national record of 49.91m set in 2003.
