Singapore Institute of Management, Wednesday, September 23, 2015 — Defensive plays made the difference as Singapore Management University (SMU) played their way from a set down to clinch a 3-1 victory over Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) in the Singapore University Games (SUniG) men’s volleyball championship.
The win came as a huge boost for SMU, increasing their chances of qualifying for the upcoming Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic Games.
Libero Toh Hong Meng (#3) was dominant on the defensive end, denying several of SIM’s Daryl Lee (#7) and Raymond Ong (#12) spikes throughout the game.
In turn, after a disappointing first set, his play boosted SMU’s morale, sparking them to take the remaining three sets with ease.
On the offensive end, SMU also took advantage of SIM’s defensive loopholes and made sure to cover up for their own to deny SIM easy points.
In the closing set, Bryan Choy (#6) and Malcolm Han (#14) were imposing at the net and roofed several of SIM’s spikes. Eventually, SIM succumbed due to their own mistakes.
SMU will next face Singapore University of Technology and Design on Monday, 7.15 p.m., while SIM will face Nanyang Technological University on Friday at 8.30 p.m. Both games will be played at the Singapore Institute of Management.
