NUS, Sunday, November 15, 2015 — St. Andrew’s Secondary defeated Raffles Institution 17-5 to win the under-14 championship at the Singapore Cricket Club Schools’ and Colleges Rugby 7s. The schools’ tournament was postponed due to the haze during the weekend of the international SCC 7s.
The Saints were clearly the best team of the competition, as they also defeated defending champions Anglo Chinese School (Independent) 24-0 in the semis.
“I told the boys before the finals that they have been playing with heart and they have been playing for each other, and that’s what makes the team different. You can be skillful, an expert at passing the ball, but the moment you don’t play together, it’s difficult to win. I’m proud of these boys because they showed they played with their heart and they played for each other,” said Sidney Kumar, teacher-in-charge of the team.
“We gave it a hundred percent, and we knew we could win it. We had a rough start but slowly warmed up and got into the game,” said Umar Sha’ari, captain of the Under-14 Saints team.
Tanglin Trust School clinched the under-16 title after successfully they defeated Lycee Francais Singapore 17-0.
Tanglin Trust School also managed to dominate the under-18 championship after defeating Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) 22-14 in the final.
“It’s been two days of exhilarating rugby played by our local schoolboys, and it’s heartening to see that everyone had a great time, showcasing a great deal of sportsmanship, spirit and talent, which are the core values upon which this SCC 7s Schools and Colleges tournament is built on,” said Jonathan Leow, Chairman of the SCC International Rugby 7s Organising Committee.
