Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, February 12, 2016 – Deyi Secondary overwhelmed Yishun Secondary 43-20 to claim their first win in the second round of the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
Joanne Lim (#12) and Ashmita Rai (#7) led Deyi in scoring, with 16 points and 10 points respectively. Regina Schiele (#11) led Yishun with an 11-point performance.
In the opening period, Deyi drew first blood behind a layup by Joanne Lim (#12). However, both teams went scoreless for the next 2:30 as they struggled with converting their shots. This prompted a timeout by Yishun at the 7-minute mark of the period.
Following the timeout, Yishun continued to struggle, while Deyi found their groove offensively. Smothered by the tight defense put up by Deyi, Yishun remained scorelees until Regina Schiele (#11) drew a foul and converted a free throw at the end of the quarter, with Deyi leading 8-1.
The momentum remained in Deyi’s favour in the second quarter, and they had their best offensive output with 16 points. On the defensive end, Deyi limited the amount of good looks at the basket that Yishun could find.
Yishun managed to end their scoring drought at the midway mark of the second quarter after Chelsea Ng (#7) sank a jumpshot. As a result, Deyi’s lead ballooned to 19 points as they pulled away to lead 24-5 at half time.
After the half time intermission, Deyi came out of the gates determined to seal the game, by implementing a full-court press against Yishun, earning themselves easy fast break points off turnovers by Yishun. This prompted a timeout by Yishun with 1:34 left in the quarter.
Following the timeout, Yishun came out inspired and scored on their first offensive possession on a fast break layup by Regina Schiele (#11). From then on, Yishun continued to build up momentum, minimising turnovers as they played with composure against Deyi’s full-court press.
All five points scored in the quarter by Yishun came after the timeout. However, Yishun were unable to pace Deyi in scoring, as the quarter ended with Deyi leading 34-10.
In the final quarter, Yishun came out determined to fight until the final buzzer. Yishun put up their best performance in the match in the closing period, where they locked up defensively to hold Deyi to just nine points.
Yishun outgunned Deyi 10-9 in the period but their inspired performance came too late to stop Deyi from winning 43-20.
