Singapore Basketball Centre, Tuesday, March 1, 2016 —Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) took North Vista Secondary (NV) apart in a scintillating 2nd quarter display to successfully defend their title with a 58-21 victory in the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship final.
Patricia Orenza (#7) scored a game-high 22 points while Yuki Kung (#3) bagged a team-high 7 points for North Vista.
SCGS, who were the former South Zone champions, are contesting in the North Zone in only their second year but they successfully defended their title. SCGS had beaten Anderson Secondary in the 2015 final.
The lopsided nature of this final was a surprising one after SCGS only narrowly edged out North Vista in their 2nd round match-up.
Both teams did not play to their usual standards in a scrappy 1st quarter, as shots were not falling and many jump balls were called by the referees. After a tensed start to opening quarter, Jamie Chan (NV #13) knocked down a right-wing 3-pointer to put North Vista up 4-2, their first and only lead of the game. SCGS, however, ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 8-4.
With SCGS up 12-4 in the 2nd, North Vista responded with a 5-0 run to force a timeout by the defending champs with 7:53 to go. The timeout was a timely one as SCGS went on a 16-1 run to close out the quarter. The run was catalysed by a stingy defence and efficiency on the offensive end, with North Vista’s turnovers also playing a part.
SCGS led 28-10 after two quarters and the contest was effectively over by halftime.
It was more of the same in the 3rd quarter as SCGS started out with an 8-0 run to extend their lead, with their opponents’ morale clearly dented by that point.
The rest of the game was a mere formality as North Vista never came within striking distance and SCGS comfortably saw out the game to win back-to-back to titles with a 58-21 success.
Christ Church Secondary had claimed a 3rd place finish after defeating Deyi Secondary 70-58 in the 3rd/4th placing match a day earlier. All four schools will be participating in the National B Division Basketball Championship which will begin later this month.
