National Stadium, Friday, April 29, 2016 — Singapore Sports School (SSP) claimed the B Division boys 4x400m gold medal in style, as they broke a 13-year-old record at the 57th National Schools Track and Field Championships. The SSP quartet clocked 3 minutes 26.16 seconds.
The previous electronically-timed record for the event stood at 3:26.55, set in 2003 by Raffles Institution.
Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) (ACSI) came in second, completing the four-part race in 3:28.43. Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) finished third, clocking 3:33.64.
First runner for SSP, Shawn Jong, the current 400m hurdles gold medalist, finished ahead of everyone. Catholic High followed closely behind, and HCI was in third place.
Second runner Wei Guan extended SSP’s lead, while third runner Irfan Qabeel kept their lead intact as the other competitors struggled to close in.
In the last lap, Marcell Tan took the baton and finished off the race strongly, holding off a closing Joshua Lim of ACS(I), the 400m record breaker.
After the race, Marcell Tan commented, “It was an intense race and we were aiming for the record and eventually we broke it and all of us are very glad that we did. Me and Wei Guan were not in top form as we ran the 100m and 4x100m earlier on but we persevered through it and did our very best.”
On future goals, Shawn Jong commented, “My future goals would be to work together with Coach Pedro to qualify for major youth games next year like World Youth, Commonwealth Youth, Asian Youth, SEA Youth. And last but not least, representing Singapore and doing the country proud.”
