Yio Chu Kang Stadium, Sunday, July 17, 2016 — St. Andrew’s Secondary defeated Raffles Institution (RI) 5-0 to win the under-16 rugby final of the Singapore Youth Olympic Festival.
Saints were undefeated in their four games, starting the day with a 17-12 win over Anglo-Chinese School (Independent).
ACS(I) finished third after a 12-7 win over the National Rugby Academy (NRA) Select.
Raffles qualified for the final after topping Group B with three straight wins over Junyuan (29-5), NRA Select (7-5), and ACS (Barker Rd) (15-12).
Said Miguel William, 15, of Saints, “The most fun game was the first game against ACS(I). Our team are mostly Sec 3s and we came in as underdogs since we were the younger team. We went in hoping to win and managed a last-minute try (to beat ACS(I) 17-12).”
Miguel added that the Saints are training to prepare for the upcoming Singapore Rugby 7s tournament.
Singapore Polytechnic won the U-18 category after a 12-5 victory over Temasek Polytechnic.
Rugby is one of 11 sports making up the festival. The other sports are athletics, fencing, 3-on-3 basketball, football 7s, badminton, sailing, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo and volleyball.
