The Arena, Monday, March 20, 2017 — Ang Mo Kio Secondary School (AMK) secured their second win in their National B Division School Premier League 2 Football campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Dunearn Secondary School (DUN) over two days of play due to wet weather.

Two goals by Muhammad Hakeem (AMK #9) and Muhammad Irfan (AMK #10) helped to overturn a one-goal deficit during the first half of the match, which was played two weeks ago on March 6. AMK’s captain Muhammad Nur Darwisy credited the victory to his team’s “team spirit”.

“The opponent was a tough one, it was a tough match,” said the 17-year-old.

“We followed according to coach’s plans and we worked very hard even though we were one nil down before we managed to get two goals and get the win,” he added.

The second half of the match kicked off with both teams being evenly matched in the middle of the pitch where most of the possession was being played.

Knowing that they were behind, Ang Mo Kio worked hard to press Dunearn and they were soon rewarded through Muhammad Hakeem, who scored off a corner in the 47th minute. Despite the early goal, Dunearn did not lose their composure and were still controlling the majority of the possession.

But for all of their quick, flowing passes and great control of the ball, Dunearn could not find the incisive final pass to punish Ang Mo Kio. Relying on counter attacks and set pieces, Ang Mo Kio continued to threaten.

At the 60th minute, Muhammad Fatris had to be alert as he made a crucial save following an Ang Mo Kio corner to keep the score level. At the other end of the pitch, Ang Mo Kio were throwing bodies behind the ball and doggedly defended their goal, pestering and denying the Dunearn players any time on the ball.

But all their hard work almost got undone six minutes later when a beautiful cross into the box from the right found Dunearn’s forward Brendan Kumar (DUN #11) who timed his run to perfection. However, with only the goalkeeper to beat, he could not find the net and shot wide of the goal to his agony.

Dunearn would rue this missed chance soon enough as Ang Mo Kio punished them on the counter in the 79th minute through Muhammad Irfan who was put through on goal.

Losing his marker and one-on-one with the goalkeeper, Muhammad Irfan kept his cool and powered the ball home to clinch the three points. AMK’s coach Hairil Amin was pleased with the result and praised his boys saying that “they never give up”.

“I told them, ‘you just need to get that first goal, the moment we equalise we will get this game’ and true enough that we get the goal,” said the 40-year-old.

“The good thing about these boys is they never give up.”

In the final match of SPL 2 Group R, AMK will play against Woodlands Secondary School while Dunearn will face New Town Secondary School on Wednesday, March 22.
