Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, April 4, 2017 — Jurong West Secondary (JWS) outlasted Dunman High School (DHS) 39-34 in the second round of the National B Division Basketball Championship.
With this win, Jurong West have a 3-3 win-loss record in the Nationals. They ended their season as third place of group Q in the second round.
This loss gives Dunman High a 3-3 win-loss record in the Nationals and they ended their season as fourth place of group Q in the second round.
Both teams started the game cold. Neither teams were making their shots despite the open looks.
Jurong West’s Chingyi (JWS #11) made the first basket with a simple out-of-bounds play, getting free of his defender with a screen from his teammate.
Shortly after, with a simple pick and roll and a lack of communication on Dunman High’s defensive end, Gavin (JWS #15) made a wide-open under-basket.
Despite Jurong West scoring four quick points. Their shooting woes continued. Both sides could not make their shots.
Dunman High, understanding that their shots were off, drove in more. While they were unable to capitalize on several open baskets, they managed to draw the foul to get to the free throw line.
Despite chances at the free throw line, Dunman High were not able to capitalize and Jurong West were up 4-2 after the first quarter.
Both teams started to get into a rhythm in the second quarter.
Dunman High were able to make several good plays to bring the game to a tie.
However, whenever the game was tied, Jurong West answered by scoring a few baskets of their own to bring the lead back up.
At the end of the second quarter, Jurong West outscored Dunman High 12-11 and were up 16-13.
In the third, Colin Ho (DHS #10) scored four points with his crafty center-moves into the paint area to cut Jurong West’s lead down to one.
However, Jurong West were still up 21-19 at the end of the third.
Things started heating up in the fourth. Both teams started making their shots.
Dunman High played their full-court press defense and were able to force several turnovers off Jurong West. While they were able to convert some of the turnovers into fast-break points, a good transition defense by Jurong West prevented Dunman High from scoring farther.
With this being the last game of their season, Jurong West refused to lose. No matter how Dunman High tried to chase back, Jurong West continued to stay ahead by capitalizing on their shots and making them.
With less than one minute left, Dunman High were still within striking distance and stood a chance to catch up. They started fouling to stall for time and get back the possession, hoping Jurong West would miss their free throws.
However, Dunman High’s plan backfired. The Jurong West players made five clutch free throws and eventually took the game 39-34, ending Dunman High’s season.
Captain Jonathan Goh (DHS #7) said, “I thank you guys for this journey. Thank you for all the effort put in during training and having stuck together for this entire journey. I’m just glad that we could create our own legacy together as a team.”
